Food-grade recycled content gains attention in flexible packaging
26 October 2026
Flexible packaging producer Charter Next Generation (CNG) is examining how post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic can be used in food-contact films, as manufacturers look for ways to increase recycled content while maintaining food safety and package performance.
At Pack Expo in October, CNG discussed a study with industry partners on the safety and performance of PCR in films for food applications. The company told Packaging Dive that its use of PCR in films increased by more than 30% in 2025 compared with 2024.
Food-contact applications require particular care. According to CNG, material suppliers and manufacturers must address applicable food-contact requirements, testing and traceability. Film properties such as stiffness and toughness also need to be considered, together with potential odour or taste transfer and consistency between batches.
The company is continuing further study phases and working with packaging converter Printpack on tests involving finished packages. The appropriate recycled content, material structure and compliance approach depend on the specific application and market.
