EU packaging rules begin applying: what food brands should review

A source-based overview of the EU packaging regulation and questions for food packaging buyers.

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation began applying on 12 August 2026. It addresses packaging across its life cycle, with measures covering waste prevention, reuse and recycling. Different obligations have different implementation dates.

For food brands, this makes material selection, pack weight and supporting documentation important topics when reviewing packaging specifications. A format described as recyclable still needs to match the relevant collection and recycling system.

Herris perspective: discuss the destination market, food-contact requirements and processing conditions before changing a packaging structure. This is an industry overview; consult the official rules for the obligations that apply to a specific product.
